Childhood Hometown of Charles Starrett

The story goes that Charles’ father died when he was young, and his grandfather took care of him.  His grandfather would be Leroy S. Starrett, the founder of Starrett Tools in Athol, Mass..  L. S. sent little Charles to live with a brother in his own hometown of South China, Maine.

South China is one of four villages that make up the town of China.  The Starretts’ would have been one of the more respected families in town.  But it was a very small town.
