“South of Arizona”

Okay. Let me see if I’ve got my geography straight. Trail City (AD 1861) is a small town, a new town that is just getting their first Ranger. And they are located south of Arizona. Not in Mexico, mind you, because this is a US town. But south of Arizona.

And Charles may have “a song on his lips”, but it never leaves them cuz he doesn’t do any singing in this.

There’s trouble in Trail City. The rustlers don’t want no law, so they ambush and kill the new Ranger, and have one of their own take his place. Only problem is that the real Ranger’s sister (Iris Meredith) is coming to town. They gotta kill her, but Clay Travis gets there first. So they frame Clay for the Ranger’s murder.

“Clay”?

A lot of lame contrivances to keep this plot working. It all ends with a deadly trap set for the bad guys, which, for some reason, Charley decided to play with a big grin on his face. “You know, I think I’ll play this scene happy. I mean, Clay’s trap is working, he’d be overjoyed. I sure would be!”

The only real fun in this one is seeing Charley have a posse. The Sons of the Pioneers (who appeared in at least 30 films with him) play his ranch hands and friends, and they always ride places together with Charley in the lead.

There’s also a really lousy henchman named Doran, who isn’t very good at his job but sure seems to enjoy it.
